Norway Spruce

Picea Abies

Description

The Norway Spruce, scientifically known as Picea Abies, is known to be the fasted growing spruce in North America. They make a great choice for a privacy screen because of their branches that hang down to the ground. It has the largest cones of any spruce and branchlets that typically hang downwards. The Norway Spruce, which is planted for its wood and has a large distribution, is the primary Christmas tree in several countries around the world.

The Norway spruce is a large, fast-growing evergreen coniferous tree. It can grow quickly when it is young: up to 2 ft per year for the first 25 years under ideal conditions. Its growth slows down once it reaches 65 ft tall. The tree begins producing seeds in its fourth decade and can live for up to 300 years in its natural European habitat. The Norway Spruce prefers full sun.

Where it can be found

The Norway Spruce can grow in USDA Hardiness Zones 3-8.

Norway Spruce is widely planted throughout North America, particularly in the Northeastern, Pacific Coast, Rocky Mountain states, and southeastern Canada. There are also naturalized populations from Connecticut to Michigan.
